PS.5 Modeling

Standards

  1. Oklahoma Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS): Science > Biology I > Science Processes and Inquiry > PS.5

Model – Modeling is the active process of forming a mental or physical representation from data, patterns, or relationships to facilitate understanding and enhance prediction. The student will accomplish these objectives to meet this process standard.

Content Skills Learning Targets Big Ideas Essential Questions
    6 - Model (Representation)
    2 - Predict (Using a model)
    6 - I can model a representation.
    2 - I can make predictions using a model.
    A. Modeling helps to conceptualize what is observed.
A.1 What observations can be modeled?
A.2 What kind of representations can be used to demonstrate what is observed?
  2. Oklahoma Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS): Science > Biology I > Science Processes and Inquiry > PS.5 > O.1

Interpret a biological model which explains a given set of observations.

Content Skills Learning Targets Big Ideas Essential Questions
    Model
    2 - Interpret (Model)
2 - I can interpret a model that explains observations.
    A. A model is not a good model if it can not be interpreted to explain a set of observations.
A.1 How does one interpret a model to see if it explains a given set of observations?
  3. Oklahoma Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS): Science > Biology I > Science Processes and Inquiry > PS.5 > O.2

Select predictions based on models (e.g., pedigrees, life cycles), and when appropriate, apply mathematical reasoning to make accurate predictions.

Content Skills Learning Targets Big Ideas Essential Questions
    1 - Select (Predictions)
    2 - Apply (Mathematical reasoning)
    3 - Make (Predictions)
1 - I can select predictions based on models.
    2 - I can apply mathematical reasoning.
    3 - I can make accurate predictions.
    A. Models can be used to make predictions.
A.1 How does a model help one make predictions?
A.2 How can mathematical reasoning be used to make accurate predictions, based on a model?
  4. Oklahoma Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS): Science > Biology I > Science Processes and Inquiry > PS.5 > O.3

Compare a given model to the living world.

Content Skills Learning Targets Big Ideas Essential Questions
    World
    2 - Compare (Model)
2 - I can compare a model to the physical world.
    A. Models are used to help better understand the physical world.
A.1 How does a model represent the physical world?
A.2 Given a set observations, how might one make a model that represents them?
