Preferred Browser:  FireFox and Safari work well with the use of Google Earth Local maps that may be commonly used.  Internet Explore does throw an error if map code is used with the webpage resource.  

 

Plugins Used:  Java is absolutely required for uploading files and using the web page resource.  Adobe, Quicktime, PowerPoint and others will be used consistently depending on participants uploading of files.

Adobe Reader is free software that lets you view and print Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files. Instructors and students may obtain Adobe's distiller software for PC's or for the Mac, directly print to pdf format. All users may upload pdf files.

Java enables applets on web sites to be run within browsers. Java is required to construct web pages, upload files including zipped BB content and web page archives.
Apple QuickTime player is for viewing video in Apple's QuickTime format. Works with over 30 audio, video and image formats. Streaming content is also supported. With this plug-in, supported formats, will automatically play within ALCA's web page and presentation resources.

Macromedia Shockwave and Flash is for viewing interactive content. Both dir and swf file formats, when uploaded and placed within ALCA web page or presentations resources will automatically play.
This download is for users who don't have Microsoft PowerPoint and use IE.  It allows one to view PowerPoint 95, 97, 2000, and 2002 presentations. Plug-in runs on both PC and Mac computers. Both instructor and student may upload PowerPoint files.

RealOne Player is for streaming audio and video content.

MDL Chime is a plug-in that interactively displays 2D and 3D molecules directly in web pages.

Cortona VRML Client is a fast and highly interactive Web3D viewer that is ideal for viewing 3D models on the Web. Cortona VRML Client works as a VRML plug-in for popular Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Safari, Netscape Navigator, Mozilla, etc.) and office applications (Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, etc).

Word Viewer 2003 lets you open Word 2003 documents and documents created with all previous versions of Microsoft Word for Windows and Microsoft Word for Macintosh. In addition to Word document files (.doc), you can also open files saved in the following formats:

Rich Text Format (.rtf), Text (.txt), Web Page formats (.htm, .html, .mht, .mhtml), WordPerfect 5.x (.wpd), WordPerfect 6.x (.doc, .wpd), Works 6.0 (.wps), Works 7.0 (.wps), and XML (.xml)

The OpenOffice application is not a "plug-in" but consider it an option.

OpenOffice.org is a multiplatform and multilingual office suite and an open-source project. Compatible with all other major office suites, the product is free to download, use, and distribute.  It is the application to be used in the new MIT's $100 laptop.
