This simple Excel file provides an opportunity for groups of educators to look at the school calendar within the context of academic instruction quality.

Administration can use file to monitor academic time specific to grade levels or student groups. Teachers can correlated when content standards / units of study are addressed and look at possible academic factors have on SOPIs.

Instructions:

  1. Download the attached Excel file below.
  2. Group should consider what a 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 means in terms of instructional quality.
  3. In the Events column enter holidays, breaks, testing, professional development, and so on.
  4. Enter standards / units addressed each week.
  5. For each given week, based on Events determine the instructional quality potential.

Suggestions:

  1. It is important to do this in groups to facilitate understanding of factors that may impact classroom learning.
  2. Consider doing activity on a Smart Board so group internalize the picture of year long instruction.
  3. One could fill in or color cells of the Excel file to get a horizontal bar graph reflecting potential academic quality or just draw a line as indicated in image.
  4. Final image should be placed in Instructional Binder.
