History of ALCA
Originally funded through the US Department of Education in 1997, the Aurora Learning Community Association (ALCA - 501c3 nonprofit) began as the Aurora Project, a Technology Innovation Challenge Grant project. The Aurora team involved a collaboration of one university, eight public and private K - 12 schools, Pioneer Telephone Cooperative, over five state agencies, and various nonprofit organizations.

The Aurora Project's goals included the creation and support of a web-based community supporting the creation and delivery of informational and educational resources between and within physical communities. This goal included the online development of curriculum emphasizing authentic learning and products for comparitive studies. The project engaged many Oklahoma teachers in creating innovative lessons with locally-collected data which would ultimately be shared through ALCA.
