Can You Be an "Eye-Spy"?

A student can become an "Eye-Spy" in this activity. Not only will the students carefully observe and record their own eye color in self portraits, but they will also have an opportunity to see how their eye color "measures up" in a graph of classroom eye color. Focus your eyes on this activity to see whose eye color comes out on top!

Learner Goals

  • Activity
    a. Use a mirror to look at your eyes. Look at the color of your eye and the shape and size of each part.
    b. Draw and color your face using "My Face" worksheet.(See Step Supplement)
    c. Fill in the missing color word in the sentence about your picture.
    d. With your class, fill in the square on the "Eye-Spy" Graph that will show the colors of eyes in your class. (See Step Supplement)
    e. Compare your results with classes from other areas using the Data Form.

Required Resources

  • Materials Materials required are a mirror for each student, drawing and coloring supplies, "My Face" worksheet for recording individual data on a self portrait, and an "Eye Spy" graph for recording class data.
  • Resource to be used with Can You Be an "Eye-Spy"? activity

Optional Resources

  • Digital camera Individual pictures taken of each student could be used in the recording of classroom results on a large butcher paper graph. These pictures would allow the graph to show not only what eye color was represented but also who it was. Furthermore, these pictures could be reused in other classroom graphs. If a digital camera is unavailable, a regular 35 mm camera and scanner to digitize the photographs can be substituted.
  • The Human Eye By using penlights, the children could not only easily see the color of their eyes and that of their classmates, but could see the response of the iris and pupil to light. This website gives information about the parts of the human eye and a wealth of information about eyesight in general. The site is maintained by Nigel Purchon, who has taught biology for 31 years in the UK.
