Story Elements Checklist

This rubric can be printed out and utilized to check the students' listening skills after they hear a story. It can then be used for the students to list the elements of the stories they create. Note: This rubric was designed to be used with Native American stories/legends, but could be adapted for use with any story.

1. The story's title should be interesting and should convey what the story is about. Write the name of the title.    
2. The story's characters should play an active role in the story or legend. List the names of the characters.    
3. The setting should include enough information that the reader can picture the story. Describe the setting, listing the place, time, and other important details.    
4. The plot of the story should include a beginning, middle, and ending. How did this story begin?    
What happened in the middle?    
What happened at the end?    
5. The moral of a story is the lesson that the story teaches. What is the moral of this story?    
6. Native American stories traditionally include something about nature. What part of nature does this story include?
