Understanding Bloom's Taxonomy is essential for applying Depth of Knowledge (DoK) used by the Oklahoma State Department of Education for student assessments. This task provides a review of Bloom's.

Standards Task (3 of 14) Time: 15 minutes

Teacher Goals

  • As a member of your PLC, you can converse with other team members concerning the historical background and grounding for Depth of Knowledge and how it relates to Bloom's Taxonomy.
  • Using the Taxonomy content linked to this task, you will integrate the language for the different Bloom levels into student learning and in your professional conversations with your PLC.

Required Resources

Steps

  1. Applying Bloom's Vocabulary in Learning

Reflect on the language used in each of the web pages linked below.
    • Consider to what extent you include this language with your learners as they demonstrate learning on Bloom's different levels.
    • Consider in practical terms how you could be continually reminded of using Bloom's vocabulary to engage learners.
Share with your PLC Facilitator a practical approach to keeping Blooms "front and center" in student learning that you use or will use in the future.

Do this in your task window's Your Comments box. Be sure to click the Save Your Comments button when finished.
  2. Bloom's Taxonomy with New Language

Reflect on the new version of Bloom's Taxonomy. The levels have been changed from nouns to verbs with a clearer explanation of each level.

Consider how, if at all, this new version supports educators in helping students to learn.
  3. Relationship between DoK & Bloom's

Depth of Knowledge (DoK) is used extensively in assessing levels of knowledge in the Oklahoma Core Curriculum assessments required by the State of Oklahoma. Each assessment item is identified with both the standard and objective being assessed and its DoK.

Review the diagram linked below. The diagram illustrates how the DoK is related to the newer version of Bloom's Taxonomy.

It is essential to apply DoK to everyday learning using Bloom's as its foundation.
  4. Add to PLC Guide

Click on each link below. Then, print them to include in your PLC Guide.

If a particular web page is in a frame, click the right mouse button and select the Frame option to display in a new window. Then print the web page.

If you are using a Macintosh, you may need to press the Control key while clicking in the frame. Next, right click the mouse (if you are using one) and select the Frame option to display in a new window. Then print the web page.

Note: If you have already included the Bloom's and Depth of Knowledge diagram in your PLC Guide, review the linked diagram below with the one in your Guide. If there have been changes, replace it with this newer version.
