The fundamental objective in this lesson is to get the student to realize that the y-intercept represents the initial amount in a relationship of two variables for application purposes.
This will provide you and the student something “physical” to identify or relate with the y-intercept of a line. The connection of “b” in y = mx + b and the initial amount on this problem must be clarified by the teacher. Students should be able to notice on their own that the rate of change should remain constant in both instances of data collection.
