Sooner Coal-Power Plant / Catoosa Research Facility / Covanta Energy Scavenger Plant

All students should be focused on energy conversion from one form to another and the infrastructure required to accomplish the conversion.  In addition, APES students should also focus on the source of the fuel used (e.g., where did it come from, how much is used), EPA regulations, pollutants and their control and ramifications.
Sooner Power Plant What were their answers / explanations?..................
1. How is the coal prepared for the furnace?
2. Is all coal the same?
3. Where does the coal come from?
4. What is the rate of coal consumption (e.g., tons/day)?
5. How much energy is produced per ton of coal (e.g., megajoules)?
6. Distinguish between the energy produce and the power generated from a power plant.
7. How much electrical power does this power plant produce (e.g., megawatts)?
8. How efficient is the Sooner power plant (i.e., coal's chemical potential energy converted to electrical energy)?
9. What are the limiting factors of the design of a power plant in terms of how much power that may be generated by it?
10. How much electrical current is generated. Is it DC or AC? If AC, how is the alternating current generated?
11. Explain what the power grid is about and how this power plant plays into it.
12. What is the rpm for the generator?
13. If copper is used in the generator, how long would the copper wire stretch? If not copper, what and why? What is the diameter of the wire?
14. What gases are released from the plant?
15. How much CO2, SO2, etc is released? How much is released per ton of coal?
16. What federal regulations do power plants required to be attentive to?

Covanta Energy Incinerator What were their answers / explanations?..................
17. What kind of waste can not be received to a incinerator?
18. How much solid waste is delivered each day?
19. How much solid waste must be reserved for the weekend to keep the chambers burning until Monday?
20. What happens to the "metals" that might be in the waste?
21. How hot do the chambers get? Why is it maintained at that temperature?
22. Is air / O2 blown into the chambers?
23. How much ash is generated per day?
24. What happens to the ash?
25. What is the rate of consumption of water that is converted over to steam?
26. Is water used to remove heat away from the system?
27. What is the steam used for?
28. What are the EPA guidelines for emissions for an incinerator?
29. What kinds of sensors are utilized (i.e., what do they check for)?
30. What are the advantages for utilizing an incinerator as compared to say a landfill?
31. What are the "politics" that work against a facility of this nature?
33. What kinds of compounds do you need to watch out for?

Catoosa Research Facility What were their answers / explanations?..................
34. What kinds of research is done at the facility?
35. How does horizontal drilling work?
36. How is a drilled hole sealed to prevent contamination into ground water?
37. How does volume of product change as it is pulled from the ground?
