Cartoons and comic strips can be used from beginner level to advanced level. Cartooning is a great way to think through a reading selection using a creative outlet. Through cartoons, a particular point, can be illustrated much more quickly and interestingly than through words alone. A cartoon tells the same story as the paragraph or reading section. But when we look at the cartoon, we can absorb the story/concept at a glance.
Cartoons Can...
Tell a complex story in a few images
Provide comment and provoke thought on events and issues
Give an example of vocabulary related to content
Provide easily identifiable characters to form the basis for sketches
Show culture in action
Discuss Reading Selection
After reading the selection, hold a group discussion to discuss the major elements of the text.
Cartooning
Based on the elements of the story discussed, you will have to create a cartoon with six slides. Following are some options:
Poster Paper
If space is available, consider using butcher paper and draw your cartoon larger for all to see.
SmartBoard
Depending on access, consider looking at using a white board to draw your slides.
Cut Outs
Consider using cutouts from magazines to create your cartoon.
Speech Bubble
Use a maximum of two speech bubbles per slide. One should have short phrases only.
Share
When done with cartoon, be prepared to present your comic strip with partners, groups, or with the whole class.
Structure
As per teacher guidance, use one of the following or choose another structure for organizing the content of your slides.
2 Slides: Beginning of story
2 Slides: Middle of story
2 Slides: End of story
