K-W-L

This strategy created by Donna Ogle is a three column chart that helps a student to process information before, during and after reading a text selection.
  1. Draw the Chart

Using the following options for accessing/constructing a KWL Chart.
    • Fold a piece of paper into three columns and label the first column K (know), second column W (Will or Want), third column L (Learned).
    • Download Smartboard file
    • eKWL Chart (access key)
    • Expanded KWL Chart (access key)
  2. K

Before being exposed to the reading or other information about a given topic by your teacher.  Use prior knowledge or related understandings of the topic and fill in this column with words, terms, phrases.
  3. W

In this column predict what might be learned by glancing at the topic headings, pictures, and illustrations that are found in the reading.  Focus on new ideas about the topic that may appear. Consider also to write about what is Wanted to gained from reading the text passage.
  4. L

After reading, enter in this column new knowledge gained from the reading.  Identify and explain any misperceptions about the topic that was placed in the K column.  Discuss you thinking prior to reading and how it changed after reading the text.
