Interpretive Level
Ask students to read a text selection and immediately answer these "interpretive" questions:
What does the author mean in this selection?
What is the document's single, overall message?
Write the answers in the middle column.
Literal Level
Identify the key words and phrases in the selection that led to their interpretations. Write these words and phrases in simple sentences within the first column.
Applied Level
Relate the central message of the selection to their prior knowledge and experiences. Draw specific, definable parallels and record these in the last column.
