The Meaning Of (Version 1)

This strategy focuses on helping a student develop a working understanding of academic vocabulary.

  1. Textbook Definition

    Get a copy of the selected textbook definitions from your teacher.

  2. Track Understanding

    Use the following strategies to check understanding.

    √ Use a check to indicate clear understanding of specific words used to define a specific academic term.
    ? Use to check specific words or phrases used to define a specific academic term that you do not clearly understand.
    Underline Underline phrases of the definition that are not clearly understood.

  3. Fix the ?

    After marking the term definition with √, ?, and underlines, use a dictionary and/or a peer to determine what the terms/phrases in question mean.

  4. Your Version

    After the definition is clearly understood, rewrite the definition using your own words.

  5. Draw a Picture

    Draw an illustration of the term that conveys the meaning of the word.

  6. Discuss

    Share with a partner how your picture illustrates the meaning of the term's definition.

  7. Be Prepared

    Be prepared to share your definition and illustration with the class.
