Strategy Log (E Lima)

This simple note-taking tool is designed to help students to identify the reading strategies they use and their usefullness in helping comprehension.  It allows one to do self-assessment for their own facility with multiple reading strategies.
  1. Explanation

    The purpose of the Strategy Log is in its diagnostic power to uncover specific strengths and weaknesses in a one's approach to reading.  As you use a particular strategy, be attentive to it impact on your reading comprehension.
  2. Strategy Log Chart

    If your teacher has not provided a copy of the strategy log chart download the preferred version linked below.

  3. Model

    Ask your teacher to model how to use the log.  Have them model using a sample reading selection.
  4. Strategy Selection

    Scan over the assigned reading selection and then select from a series of literacy strategies linked above.  Review what the different strategies do as needed.
  5. Read

    As you read the selection, reflect on the strategy used being sure to identify problems in understanding the text and how the strategy used helped or didn't help and why.  Record in log.
  6. Learn From One Another (Discuss)

    Break up into small groups of three or four students each.  Share with one another the strengths and weaknesses of their strategies used.
