(HCDRS) Highlight, Chunk, Discuss, Research & Summarize

The Highlight, Chunk, Discuss, Research & Summarize (HCDRS) strategy provides a progression that helps students construct a deeper understand of a selected text.
  1. Preparing Passage (Teacher Note)

    Access template by clicking on Resources, clicking on Share, then entering  "fjVdk71zW6"  into the Access Key field.  The template will appear.  Click on duplicate.png to duplicate the resource and begin entering the passage to be examined.

    Your teacher may at this point print off the updated document and passout to you or if done online, provide you with a new Assess Key and you in turn use the hightlighter features in the web page resource.
  2. Highlight

    Provided with a reading selection, hightlight key information you consider important text from the selection.
  3. Chunking Text

    Referring to highlighted text, write key information form the selection onto the second column.
  4. Discuss & Compare

    As per teacher instructions, discuss with partner, group, or class what was chunked.  Reach a concensus.
  5. Summarize

    Using revised chunked text and other text resources (e.g., textbook, journal, articles) to write a comprehensive summary.
