The SQ3R strategy is a widely used strategy that helps students have high levels of comprehension of a selected text.
Survey
Provided with a reading selection, preview the material paying special attention to headings, subheadings, topic sentences, hightlighted words and possible images. As our preview the material, be thinking of how to organize the text into possible questions.
Question
Based on the previewing of the material, build a question for each heading and subheading in the text selection.
Read
Read the selection, while being careful to keep the questions in mind. From the reading, attempt to answer the questions.
Recite
After you have considered what the answer to each question is, verbalize the answer in a group discussion and/or by writing them down. This will reinforce your learning of the information. Repeat this process for all of the questions.
