Semantic Feature Analysis

Semantic features analysis strategy has students to identify and use key words and major concepts of the text.

  1. Semantic Chart

    Download the semantic chart by clicking on the chart.

  2. Topic Selection

    Scan over the assigned text and as a group determine the main topic to be examined.

  3. Key Vocabulary

    List key vocabulary related to the main topic and list them on the left hand column.

  4. Feature Properties

    List the properties or features of the topic across the top row of chart.

  5. Review and Read

    Review the terms and properties in matrix.  Read carefully the text selection.

  6. Check Marks

    While reading, place check marks in the matrix when a vocabulary word reinforces one of the properties fo the topic.

  7. Share and Discuss

    After reading and completing the matrix, share your observations with others.  Discuss differing results and identify which vocabulary words best communicate the essential properties fo the topic.
