Pause-Think-Retell

Many students do not take the time to stop and think about what they have just read.  This strategy will help you better track your understanding.
  1. Read

Read assigned text (e.g., chapter section, passage, poem, word problem).
  2. Think

After reading the text, stop and think about what you have just read.  Consider these optional mental questions that might help guide your thinking.
    • What are the key points?
    • What just happened?
    • What was the text evidence I should recall?
    • Did an event just happen?  What was it?
  3. Retell to a Partner

Share with another student what you have just read telling him/her what you just learned about the text.

NOTE: Retalling is an import strategy for you to use when you are alone!  Practice using it.  You will become a better reader.  If possible, share your tellings at home with an adult.
  4. Partner's Turn

Have your partner share any details they recall that you may not have included in your telling.
