Text Coding (During Reading)

Text coding is a very useful tool to help students moniter their comprehension of reading a text.
  1. Introduction

    Text coding is a strategy that can help you keep track of thinking while reading.  Use the simple coding system to mark the text and record what you are thinking either in the margins or on post-it notes. If you use post-it notes, mark the page reference if applicable.  As you make connections, self-question, and respond to what you are reading, you are self-monitoring comprehension and enhancing long term understanding. The codes will help name and remember a particular thinking strategy and track the thinking throughout the text. Listed below are examples of what might be used.

    As you read the assigned text, use the text code below to self-monitor your comprehension.  Label the text using the code as instructed by your teacher.

  3. Optional Discussion
