"What's Your Angle?" Copy

Have you ever wondered if your shadow is as long as you are tall?  During this activity you will measure how long your shadow is and which direction it is pointing. Then compare how this changes depending on the season.

Engaging Questions

  • Does your shadow length have anything to do with how tall you are?

Teacher Goals

  • Demonstrate measuring abilities with both meter sticks and compasses.

Required Resources

Steps

  1. Cast a Shadow

Stand in a place outside so that your shadow is easy to see.

  2. Measure

Stand facing the Sun but DO NOT STARE AT THE SUN. Have someone measure from the back of your foot (your heel) to the end of your shadow. Record this measurement in meters.

  3. The Azimuth

Using a compass, measure how many degrees from North your shadow was pointing. Record this measurement.

  4. How tall are you?

If you know your height, please record this in meters. If not, have a friend measure how tall you are.

Teacher Notes

  • Begin by cautioning students to avoid looking directly at the sun. Assist students as they make the respective measurements.
