Introduction to Biomes Copy

This lesson is the first lesson of five whose end result is a group presentation of a 4' x 5' display of a specific biome.  This lesson groups the students and gives them some background on biomes.

Engaging Questions

  • What determines the type of plants and animals that thrive in an area?

Teacher Goals

  • Understand what a biome consists of: climate (temperature and precipitation), soil order and development, growthforms, and the animals which inhabit the biome especially vertebrates.

  • Be able to vaguely differentiate different biomes

  • Understand the terms biotic and abiotic factors

Required Resources

  • Textbook

  • Overhead projector or chalkboard

  • Computer with Internet or school library

Steps

  1. Engage

Break the class up into six groups and have each group sit together. Pose the question: What determines the type of plants and animals that thrive in an area?

  2. Explore

After five minutes for discussion introduce the term biome and with help from the class construct a brief definition and write it down on an overhead or on the board.

  3. Explain

Write the names of six biomes (tundra, taiga, desert, grassland, deciduous forest and rainforest) on small pieces of paper and put them in a jar or hat. go around to each group and have a representative of the group pick a biome. Explain that each group will do a weeklong project on their particular biome the result will be a 4' x 5' display of biome information and a group presentation. Tell the groups that they need to bring in a 4' x 5' piece of mat board within the next few days for their display. Hand out the rubrics for the unit and go over the criteria.

  4. Extend

With whatever time is left of class let each group start researching their biome so as to have some basic information for next class.
