This is a simple activity for making observations over a period of time.

Teacher Goals

  • The goal of this lesson is to find the average height of the children in your classroom.

  • Students will learn to measure.(both standard and metric)

  • Students will learn to add units of legnth.

  • Students will learn to average.

Required Resources

  • Yard sticks
     

Steps

  1. Measure

    Tape two yardsticks to your classroom wall so that you have a 6 foot range. Measure the height of each child in inches.

  2. Add Them Up

    Have each student combine (add) the heights of all classmates. Divide this number by the number of students.

  3. Back To Feet

    Take the average and divide it by 12. This will give you a measurement in feet and inches. Find the student or student that is closest to the class average.

Teacher Notes

  • 30-45 minutes at beginning of school year,  30-45 minutes about half way into the school year, 30-45 minutes at the end of the school year.
