Have you ever wondered how much vitamin C is in your garden tomatoes? You have heard that a healthy diet should include foods that are rich in vitamin C. Your job is to determine if there are any differences in vitamin C content compared with your neighbors garden. If there are differences, be prepared to explain why.

Steps

  1. Tomatoes

    One day before the lab, collect tomatoes from a garden. Be sure to identify the brand type, for example, "Big Boy." Keep different brands separated. Take the fruit to school on the next day.
  2. Puree

    Use a blender or mortar and pestle to grind up your tomatoes.
    Make sure that the tomatoes are all the same brand - do not mix!
  3. Measuring for Vitamin C

    Download a hard copy of the attached instructions for obtaining the concentration of vitamin C. Modify instructions so to assure that in the graphing tools provided with instructions , one labels the tomato brands used.
  4. Share Results

    In an effort to possibly identify various factors that may impact the concentration of vitamin C, please share the results of the procedure and factors that were observed concerning the gardens environment, if known.
