ALCA Server Feature Set
  1. Aurora Learning Community Association

    ALCA is a collaboration of online learning communities consisting of universities, public and private schools, technology centers, and other non-profit organizations. It even includes collaborative for-profit companies willing to share some of their resources for the benefit of the other communities.

  2. Communities

    An ALCA Community has its own web address. Other than that, a community could be a school district, university, health services, professional association, chamber of commerce, or even a collaboration of small schools.

  3. Organizations

    ALCA Organizations are used in ALCA Communities to replicate the physical, organizational, and/or work flow characteristics of a particular community or educational institution. ALCA Organizations can be linked to each other. A variety of resources, classes, and other options tailored to a particular context can be integrated into each Organization.

  4. Classes

    ALCA Classes are used to replicate the physical, organizational, and/or workflow characteristics of actual classrooms. However, Classes are so flexible they can be used for university courses, cross-curricular projects, and even virtual offices. Classes begin and end at times determined by the class moderator. Students are enrolled, given assignments to complete, and submit their work for a class. The owner of a class can communicate with the students enrolled in a class.

  5. Assignments

    The lesson resource allows you to create a standards-based curriculum activity or tool, complete with attached forms, rubrics, and other resources. A lesson may be bookmarked and also attached to other resources.

  6. My Desk

    Desktops are used in ALCA Communities by community members to create much of their work, use internal email and set personal preferences.

  7. Resources (Curriculum Tools)

    Four curriculum resources are available to create standards-based curriculum activities, lesson plans, work samples, and showcase portfolios.


  8. Resources (Presentations)

    Five presentation resources are available to present various forms of information.


  9. Resources (Learning Tools)

    Six Learning resources are available to facilitate and support learning.


  10. Resources (Information Management)

    Five Information Management resources are available to support collection and management of resources, data, and other forms of information.


  11. Standards

    Learning standards are can tightly integrated into every aspect of an ALCA Community. You can link standards to resourses, assignments, classes and organizations. You can even associate one or more standards to discussion board and mail messages and calendar events. Of course, you can also associate standards to objective, rubric, and worksample items.
  12. Communications

    ALCA Community has a variety of communication features.

    • Discussion Board
      Each Organization and Class or Office has a Dicussion Board. The Discussion Board can be turned off for each entitiy.
    • Chat
      Each Class or Office has a Flash based Chat. The chat can be turned off for each entitiy.
    • Calendar
      Organizations, Classes and My Desk has a Calendar. The calendar can be turned off if not being used. The events in the calendar has a web pages and you can attach resources.
    • Internal Mail
      The server has built-in emailing features. You can be notified when certain events take place. You can also send a message to any other registered users or buddy lists. As an option any messages received through the internal mail can be forwarded to your external email address.
